Fundraising: Getting the right
perspective

Your students' primary goal in Science Olympiad should be the accumulation of medals and trophies; not program funds. Consider finding resources that reduce student fundraising.

Donation of Funds and/or Items:
This time honored tradition has not lost its potency. Those gifted with generous hearts and abundant assets do not mind donating funds to a worthy cause. In addition, if your team has specific hardware needs, you can present your case to your local supply store or hobby shop and request that the needed materials be donated to your team.

50/50 Raffle:
Another beneficial fundraising opportunity opens up when you set up a 50/50 Raffle in which half of the profits go to the team and half go to the winner of the raffle. This may not be as lucrative as a standard raffle, but it may be looked upon more favorably by authorities. [Check with your local government to see if raffles are allowed in your area, and if so under what conditions.]

Taking Pledges for Service:
Enhance your team spirit and raise funds by
participating in a community service pledge   project. An example would be a project in which your students would solicit donations to participate in a “community clean-up activity” of a strip of highway or abandoned lot. These projects are great in that they require minimal effort on the part of your students to secure funds (People are usually glad to help out a great cause). Plus, it gives your team an opportunity to display good character and gain distinction in the community.

Dues:
Charging dues is a direct and no frills approach to fundraising. While it will take care of your
immediate monetary need, it may reduce enthusiasm in individuals who have limited experience with Science Olympiad. Because of this, it may be best to only assign dues to teams who are familiar with the benefits of participating in Science Olympiad.
